Peak Rail Santa Specials REVIEW: Derbyshire’s festive family steam-train adventure

Peak Rail Santa Specials

The Peak Rail Santa Special is a festive heritage steam-train ride, running every December from Rowsley South Station near Matlock and one of the most popular Christmas family outings in the region. Children can meet Santa on board and everyone can enjoy a wintery journey through the Derbyshire countryside.

What to expect from Peak Rail Santa Specials

There’s the typical hustle and bustle on the platform when you arrive, with elves walking by and the steam train engine being prepared. Once on board, the decorated train takes you all on a jolly, gentle ride along the track. There is an excitable atmosphere in the air, but keep in mind that the carriages are old-fashioned so some might find it a bit cramped.

Families or groups sit together at their own table (or in a private compartment) and from there you can soak up the festive fun. A tote bag awaits you on arrival, with snacks and drinks (that you choose when booking) and some activities for the children. Whilst the children sip their juices and munch on a mince pie, adults can enjoy a mince pie and a glass of wine.

Santa and his helpers make their way through the train, stopping to talk to everyone. Every child is given a gift from Santa, appropriate to their age, and can have a little chat with him and pass on their Christmas wishes. There is certainly plenty of excitement when Santa appears down the aisle.

There is other festive entertainment too; balloon modelling, a magician and some enthusiastic musicians, which helps to keep everyone in the Christmas spirit during the journey. These make their way down the train, so you can’t be sure who or what might come to your table next. Keep this in mind to manage expectations, as the children may not get to see every entertainer but hopefully they will enjoy a good mix!

The train journey route

The train follows a scenic stretch of the old Midland Railway line all the way to Matlock and back.

During the Santa Specials, passengers remain on board for the entire ride. Make sure to wave at passers-by along the way!

The return journey takes just over an hour, which felt like a good amount of time, especially when sitting with young children.

When do the Santa Specials run?

The Santa Specials run on selected days throughout December, which usually includes the first three weekends of the month, and then a few extra dates right before Christmas, including Christmas Eve! They run several times a day, so hopefully every group can find a time that suits them.

For Christmas 2025, dates are 6th, 7th, 13th, 14th, and 20th to 24th December.

How to book your Peak Rail Santa Specials and cost

Instead of buying individual seats, you must book a table or a compartment and prices do vary a bit depending on the date. Earlier weekends are slightly cheaper than the days just before Christmas.

As an example, a table of four in early December costs £80 (with drinks, snacks and presents included) rising to £90 just before Christmas. Dates nearer to Christmas do sell out, so make sure you book early if you have a particular date in mind.

Booking is only available direct from Peak Rail.

Where to find Peak Rail

Click here for Google Map location or use the app what3words: curls.means.renews.

Peak Rail’s main station is Rowsley South Station, Harrison Way, Darley Dale, DE4 2LF.

It is located on the A6 and is well signposted from both directions. If you are arriving by car, there is a large free car park by the station. Local buses do also run along the A6 if you were hoping to arrive by public transport.

Facilities at Peak Rail

There is a charming little cafe by the railway line that sells a range of hot and cold refreshments. Bare in mind, this gets very busy before and after Santa Specials. There is also a gift shop, selling a range of train-themed toys and souvenirs.

There are toilets on the platform and also on the train. Some additional toilets are also set up in the car park to cater for the many visitors.

What to do after your visit

If the weather is nice, you could take a walk or a cycle along the track that runs parallel to the trainline (click here for the detailed cycle route – it’s one of our favourite Peak District family bike rides). This would be a fun way to see the steam train from the other side, which is always pretty special.

You are also near to the village of Rowsley, which has a selection of eating and shopping options. A short drive away is Matlock and, if you choose your December weekend well, you may be able to combine it with one of their Christmas markets

Final thoughts

The Peak Rail Santa Special provides simple, old-fashioned festive charm and is a nice option for anyone looking for a family-friendly treat with young children before Christmas. The staff are friendly and clearly work hard to create a festive atmosphere. The views through the window are wonderful as you trundle along and everyone seemed to leave feeling that little bit more Christmassy.
